Bhutan is a Himalayan kingdom that remained isolated for centuries, allowing it to preserve a unique culture rooted in Mahayana Buddhism. This spiritual heritage shaped its strong respect for nature, helping protect its pristine environment and wildlife. Buddhism was introduced in the 8th century by Guru Rinpoche, and the nation was unified in the 17th century by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, who laid the foundations of Bhutanese identity and governance.
In 1907, Bhutan became a monarchy under the Wangchuck dynasty. A major transformation came in 2008 with the introduction of parliamentary democracy and the coronation of the fifth king, creating a peaceful constitutional monarchy that blends tradition with modern rule.
